Sushma Kashyap Pawan is a Hindustani Classical Vocalist and a student of music .  Born into a family of Musicians, Sushma has over 30 years of training in Agra and Jaipur Gharanas. Her mother and Guru Smt. Kushala Jagannath is a Hindustani Vocalist, a Radio Aritist and is a regular performer. Sushma took advanced lessons from Pt. K.H.Achar and Tansen Awardee Pt. Rama Rao Naik (Disciple of the Maestro Ustad Fayyaaz Khan of Agra Gharana) . She has also received training for a brief period from Smt. Aditi Upadhya. 

 

Currently training under Pt Arun David, a Senior Exponent of Jaipur Gharana and Disciple of Gaana Saraswati Pt.Kishori Amonkar. Sushma lkes to blend the aspects of both Agra and Jaipur styles and has endeavored a unique style of her own.

Sushma has performed at many leading organizations in Bangalore, Kolhapur, Hubli, Delhi, Mysore, Sirsi, Nagpur as well as Los Angeles. and many other cities in the USA

Current performances include :

  • Festival of Tabla at Soka Performing Arts

  • Dewal Club, Kolhapur  (Newspaper attached)

  • Bangalore International Center,  Samay Raag

  • Nagarkar Library,  Hubli

  • Music Festival of Sirsi 

  • Vedantha cultural Centre of Los Angeles

  • Baithaks at Bangalore and Houston.

In her youth, she has received many music scholarships and attended several workshops. To name a few concerts at Bengaluru, Sushma has performed at Sur Sagar, Ubhykar Yuva Sangeetotsav, and Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande All Night Musical Festival. 

Sushma is a regular participant at the local Los Angeles Hindustani Baitthak community, Brea Siddhivinayak Temple, Vedanta Society of Hollywood Chinmaya Mission, California, and several prestigious places. 

Sushma has also won the Swar Ganga Classical Music Competition at Atlanta in 2015 for NRI vocalists, securing first place.

Sushma's recent Project Samay Raag Series is an earnest attempt to experience the impact of Samay (Time) while rendering a Raga. The connection of time with the Raga or Raginis is based on the daily cycle of changes that occur in our own body and mind, arousing and stimulating different moods and emotions. All Raags have been recorded live at the specific time that the Raag is most impacting

Sushma also has designed a Kids Fusion Music Ensemble for one of the organizations in Los Angeles. Sushma was part of the lead design team for the Malhar Utsav held in Bengaluru in the early 2000s, and Kalyan Utsav (performing Malhar Prakaar and Kalyan Prakaar Raagas with other Guru Bandhus) organized by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
 
Sushma is proficient in singing Khayaal, Thumri, Bhajans, and other light forms of classical music.  She also performs regularly for Kathak Recitals for some of the leading Dance Schools in California. 

 

Constant quest for learning and perfecting the art is an eternal goal, not to mention the passion to reach out to global audiences.

She is a Telecommunications Engineer by academic training and is currently employed as a Sr. Software Analyst at Kinder Morgan Energy Partners in Orange County. She also teaches classical music to a handful of students at her home in Orange County.
